After loosing the chance for giving self-government for Singapore. He had sworn to everyone in Singapore he would step down his position if he had failed to let Singapore have self government. Lim Yew Hock replaces Marshall to be the Chief Minister of Singapore and went to London to get the self-government.

Singapore got self-government in 1956 with Lim Yew Hock.
After a short period of time, Singapore broke out a Chinese middle schools riot. Student had gathered outside the Chung Cheng High School and the Chinese High School to protest they sat-in over the next two weeks, organising meetings and holding demonstrations. On October 24, the government issued an ultimatum that the schools be vacated. As the deadline approached, riots started at the Chinese High School and spread to other parts of the island. Over the next five days, 13 people were killed and more than 100 were injured.
This news caught Lim Yew Hock attention and he began to take tough measures to suppress communist activities with the support of the British Governor and Commissioner of Police.
Lim Yew Hock began to suppress the anti-colonial activists and communists. He banished two Chung Cheng High School teachers and dissolved the Chinese Middle School Students' Union.
Some nine hundred people were arrested, including Lim Chin Siong, Fong Swee Suan and Devan Nair. They were released in 1959 when the People's Action Party, led by Lee Kuan Yew, won the 1959 general election to form the government as Singapore gained self rule
In 1967, after stand down his own position, Lim Yew Hock became a Muslim and adopted the name of Haji Omar Lim Yew Hock. He died in Saudi Arabia on 30 November 1984 and was buried in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
